The first step is to build your fire. You should build up your fire in pile, stacked up. Once the fire gets going, get ready to start cooking salmon. Place the campfire grill 5-7 inches above the flame. The next step is to prepare your salmon.
For this, you will want some aluminum foil, your desired vegetables, some butter, lemons or lemon juice, and some freshly caught and cleaned salmon filets. You will first need to take a piece of aluminum foil, about double the length of a piece of computer printing paper. Fold it in half. Then, place the salmon on the aluminum foil, in the middle, skin side of the filet down. Some people like to put olive oil, salt, and pepper on their salmon. You can also place your butter and vegetables into the aluminum foil and wrap it all up.
The next step is grabbing a cedar plank or split log, which you can either maybe obtain it in your woods, or bring one with you. Place the plank into the flames to burn and blacken the plank on both sides. Then place the plank on the campfire grill. You will be cooking salmon on the burnt spots, as it will be a constant heat source, which will be continuously hot to cook the salmon the best.
Place the wrapped up salmon in aluminum foil on the plank’s burned spot to cook while it is still hot. After a couple of minutes, reopen the aluminum foil and turn the salmon over, spreading the butter around. Put lemon juice, either pour it or squeeze some fresh juice, all over the salmon. Wrap it back up, and continue on cooking. Remember, while you are cooking salmon; remember to keep it on the skin side of the filet.
To know when you are done cooking salmon, you can tell by the way it cuts. If it seems to cut like warm butter, then you are set to eat. It usually takes 20-25 minutes to fully cook the salmon.
The entire process should not take you longer than 45 minutes to an hour, including cleaning the fish. Cooking salmon can be a great activity to get the whole family involved in preparing the food, and with this way of cooking salmon, there is no way you won’t have a good meal to eat from a good day’s catch.
